Welding Methods

There are many welding methods used in the field of welding.  Pick a category below to learn more about that method.  The bolded welding methods listed below are a few of the more common processes.  It is recommended that you start by learning about these, then you can expand your knowledge and learn some of the other welding methods available.

Welding methods and processes

It can be extremely confusing to grasp welding processes, especially since some are called by multiple names and others are just a type of another welding process. We’ll try to keep it simple and break these processes down into categories so you can see how they all fit together. There are four main types of welding, then some that fall outside of any of these four, which we’ll put into a bucket called “other.”

Arc Welding Processes

  • Atomic Hydrogen Welding
  • Bare Metal Arc Welding
  • Carbon Arc Welding
  • Flux Cored Arc Welding
  • Gas Metal Arc Welding – GMAW or MIG/MAG Welding
  • Gas Tungsten Arc Welding – GTAW or TIG Welding
  • Magnetically Impelled Arc Butt
  • Plasma Arc Welding
  • Shielded Metal Arc Welding – SMAW or Stick Welding

Oxyfuel Gas Welding Processes

  • Air Acetylene Welding
  • Oxyacetylene Welding
  • Oxygen/Propane Welding
  • Oxyhydrogen Welding
  • Pressure Gas Welding

  • Flash Welding
  • Upset Welding

Solid-State Welding Processes

  • Coextrusion Welding
  • Cold Pressure Welding
  • Diffusion Welding
  • Explosion Welding
  • Electromagnetic Pulse Welding
  • Forge Welding
  • Friction Welding
  • Friction Stir Welding
